Wednesday night Tammy and I headed to the House of Blues to see Christina Perri as she came through Chicago on her “The Head or Heart” tour. We walked in during Birdy’s set, blown back by her talent and voice. Everyone in the crowd seemed to agree, listening and watching intently as Birdy sang beautifully.

Right at eight o’ clock, the lights dimmed and Christina entered with a single spotlight. She walked to the microphone and blew the crowd back, singing the first verse of “Trust” a capella. Once her band joined her she began jumping around, dancing and having a great time, then grabbed a tambourine for the chorus of “Shot Me in The Heart.”

As if her voice weren’t entertainment enough, she showed more of her talents as she grabbed an acoustic guitar to play “Run” and then went to the piano later for “Sea of Lovers.” Christina was so humble all night, being all around grateful and truly happy to be up there. Before she played “Distance” off her first album she said, “I can’t believe I have two [albums]! I can’t believe I get to say that!” Her bubbly spirit was contagious, everybody smiled as she jokingly made comments about her kookiness like “Sorry guys, I tap dance when I get nervous.” She congratulated Birdy for being so young, only seventeen, and so full of talent, saying she was her hero and igniting another round of applause from the audience.

In the middle of her set she asked the crowd to participate by snapping their fingers along for a song and everyone happily obliged. Later, when she finally played “Jar of Hearts” the entire room lit up, I even saw the parents that were only there because their kids begin singing along with the chorus. Christina put on a beautiful, timeless performance, and even though many of her songs were filled with painful lyrics, her flawless show left everyone in the audience with happy hearts.
