Styx arrived at America’s River Festival in Dubuque, Iowa just under a week away from the release of “The Mission”; the band’s first studio album in 14 years. But, if their fans were afraid they might not get to hear all the great Styx hits, those fears were quickly put to rest. The opening song was “Gone, Gone, Gone” from their upcoming album, but after that it was hit after hit!
The years have not dulled Styx’s live show! Every note played and sung brought you right back to the time when these songs were written. The chemistry between original members, Tommy Shaw and James “JY” Young only served to energize not only the crowd, but the other members of the band. Each striving to put on the best possible show they could. Lawrence Gowan comical antics and flawless vocals on songs like, “The Grand Illusion”, “Lady”, and “Come Sail Away” to name a few, raised the energy of the crowd even higher. Todd Sucherman on bass and Ricky Phillips on drums only added to the excitement and put on a performances that even today’s stars strive to achieve.
In between the hits, Styx performed some covers by bands like Queen and the Beatles. They also performed “Midnight Rider” in tribute to the late Gregg Allmann. Having found out that original Batman, Adam West had passed away Gowan did his own little tribute by playing the Batman theme on the keyboards. Earlier in the evening the audience got a taste of Styx’s upcoming performance when The Guess Who brought Shaw and Gowen out to join the in performing “American Woman”
